Poly Tan Gim: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Residential Exhibition Area Interpreting Lingnan Culture and Riverside Lifestyle

Designed by Hu Sun, Songmin Liu, Jingwen Chen, Kenan Xin, and Shunhua Hu, Poly Tan Gim is a unique project that interprets the language and emotion of its location. The design team drew inspiration from the site's proximity to the Pearl River and its rich cultural heritage. The project was completed in October 2019, after being designed in early 2019 in Guangzhou.

The project's unique properties lie in its successful combination of the riverside lifestyle with the experience of Lingnan culture. It activates daily life and functional activities around the area, creating a community park that is both private and public. The design team used innovative materials such as custom-made spray paint glass and metal hanging technique to create an exquisite landscaped wall, giving the project a tactile feel.

The design process involved three main strategies: sharing and coexisting, combing and integrating, and respecting and reinterpreting. The design team sorted out the complex relationship of circulation routes, divided spaces with terrain in the open area, guided crowds with waterscape in the field area, and reinterpreted the traditional architectural language of Xiguan buildings. The project also maintained original trees, adding to its charm.

The project faced several challenges, including balancing the relationships between condition and site, public and private, and the past and the present. The design team had to define the space field orderly and dance with shackles under limited conditions, plan the optimal circulation routes of different crowds, and continue to rebrand the area in the core area of old Xiguan.

Poly Tan Gim has been recognized for its outstanding design, winning the Silver A' Landscape Planning and Garden Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award is a testament to the design team's ability to create a project that arouses memories of Xiguan in the old days and makes everyone have a sense of participation and belonging.
